L. Rodbell, 6th grade student at Portsmouth Elem. (center holding check) was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 5 years old. Knowing that other PES students also had diabetes, Rodbell decided to collect money for diabetes research. With November being diabetes awareness month--it was a perfect opportunity to also raise awareness. He set a personal goal of $200 and asked students and staff at PES to collect money for 2 weeks. During this time, Rodbell visited several classrooms and shared his experiences and daily routines as a child living with type 1 diabetes. The staff and students went above and beyond his goal and collected $1,200. All money collected was sent to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDFR). Pictured are Mrs. Nelson's and Mrs. Guthrie's classrooms who raised the most money.
